We build futures and communities through affordable housing and economic development programs.
We create more possibilities for youth by giving them the educational and professional opportunities needed to thrive.
We pave a better way forward for youth and their families by creating a foundation built on love and empathy.
We remove unconscious barriers for youth facing mental health challenges, ensuring they always have a place to turn to.
At Handy, preparing youth for the future means more than helping them reach academic milestones. It also means making sure they feel confident, capable, and ready to step into new opportunities.
Recently, our young men at the Tech Center experienced a meaningful moment that did just that. Through the generosity of Mr. Harrell, a former men’s clothing store owner and professional model coach, they received free suits and dress shoes to help them prepare for special and professional occasions.
But the experience went far beyond receiving clothing.
Mr. Harrell took time to teach the young men how to dress for different settings, from prom and formal events to job interviews and professional environments. They learned about personal style, proper fit, dressing for their body type, and how presentation can help make a strong first impression.
The impact was immediate. Our young men were incredibly appreciative, and the confidence they gained was clear. For many, this was not just about putting on a suit. It was about seeing themselves as polished, prepared, and worthy of every opportunity ahead of them.
Moments like this reflect the power of community support. Because of caring partners and donors, Handy youth continue to receive not only the resources they need, but also the knowledge, guidance, and encouragement to move through the world with confidence.
At Handy, we believe every young person deserves the chance to experience life’s special moments. Beyond academic support, mentoring, and essential services, our programs help create a sense of normalcy, joy, and belonging for the youth we serve.
Thanks to the generosity of Handy supporter Ariel and her incredible team, two of our youth were able to experience their dream prom moments. From a dress shopping spree to hair, makeup, shoes, nails, and every thoughtful detail in between, they were celebrated in a way that made them feel seen, valued, and special.
For many young people, prom is more than just one night. It is a milestone, a memory, and a moment to feel confident and included. Ariel’s support helped ensure these young women could fully enjoy that experience without barriers standing in the way.
This is what community makes possible. With the support of caring partners, Handy youth are able to participate in the moments that every young person should have the chance to enjoy.
Because of our village, prom dreams became a beautiful reality.
We are incredibly proud to share exciting news from our Career Pathways youth, who recently traveled to Houston, Texas, to compete in the Project Invent competition and present their prototype, Fidgibeat.
Fidgibeat is an innovative fidget device designed by Handy youth that combines a traditional fidget spinner with smart technology to track heart rate and usage patterns in real time. Created in collaboration with a licensed marriage and family therapist, the device is designed to help users capture real-time stress data, promote mental health awareness, and support more informed conversations with mental health professionals.
This achievement is especially meaningful because it represents a full-circle moment for our youth. Last year, the team presented the Fidgibeat concept in San Diego without a physical product and did not take home an award. This year, they returned with their idea brought to life as a physical prototype.
Competing against 19 other teams, Handy’s Career Pathways youth earned the Need Finder Award, recognizing their ability to truly listen to their community partner and design a solution rooted in real needs.
We are so proud of every Career Pathways youth who contributed to this project. Although not everyone was able to travel to Houston, this was a true team effort. Youth worked together to build the prototype, practiced their pitches, supported one another, and grew through the process as a team.
We are especially proud of the presenting team who traveled to the competition. They stepped outside of their comfort zones, bravely faced their public speaking fears, and represented Handy with confidence and heart. For some of our youth, this trip also marked their very first time flying, making the experience even more memorable.
Moments like this show what is possible when young people are given the tools, guidance, and encouragement to turn their ideas into impact. Through Career Pathways, Handy youth are not only preparing for future opportunities, they are creating solutions, building confidence, and discovering the power of their own voices.
