CBS Miami: Helping Youth Overcome Life’s Challenges To Build Brighter Futures

At Handy, we believe a first job can be much more than a paycheck, it can be the beginning of a brighter future.

Our workforce development partnership with Publix is helping young people gain the skills, confidence, and experience they need to succeed. From workplace exposure and professional skill-building to interviews, onboarding, and long-term career exploration, Handy and Publix are creating meaningful pathways to employment.

CBS News Miami recently highlighted this partnership as part of its Miami Proud series, sharing how Handy youth are turning their ambitions into real opportunities.

The feature follows Handy youth Jonathan, who is already thinking beyond his first position and toward a future career with Publix. His goal is to earn his commercial driver’s license and one day drive trucks for the company. His story is a powerful example of what becomes possible when young people are introduced to employers who see their potential and are willing to invest in their growth.

For more than 40 years, Handy has helped young people overcome challenging circumstances through education, mentorship, workforce development, and supportive services. Partnerships like the one we share with Publix allow that support to extend directly into the workplace, giving young people an opportunity to earn income, develop self-confidence, explore careers, and envision what their futures can become.

We are grateful to Publix for creating a welcoming environment where Handy youth can learn, contribute, and grow. This is partnership in action: businesses and community organizations working together to prepare the next generation for lasting success.
