On July 25, 150 Handy youth filled TJ Maxx and Marshalls at Coral Ridge Mall for an unforgettable morning of back-to-school shopping. Each student received $100 to select the clothing and essentials they needed to return to the classroom feeling confident, prepared and excited for the year ahead.
But the experience was about much more than what went into their shopping carts.
Throughout the morning, youth shopped alongside officers from the Fort Lauderdale Police Department and Broward Sheriff’s Office, forming positive connections through conversation, encouragement and plenty of fun. These moments helped build trust and allowed youth to engage with local law enforcement officers as mentors, supporters and members of their community.

The smiles throughout the stores said it all. From choosing the perfect first-day outfit to proudly showing off their purchases, our youth left knowing their community believes in them and is cheering them on.
Handy’s annual Back-to-School Shop with a Cop demonstrates what is possible when a community comes together around its young people. Because of this collective generosity, every cart represented more than new clothing, it represented confidence, dignity and a strong start to the school year.
