HANDY Program Information

HANDY’S Education and Career Development department is the last component of the LIFE program (education and employment). Our program is one of a kind in that we provide: tutoring, academic planning, educational workshops, post-secondary educational support, connection to internships and assistance with job placement.

HANDY provides individualized services based on each scholar’s grade level:

Middle School

  • One-on-one tutoring and homework assistance provided by certified Broward County Public School teachers
  • Educational life plan
  • College tours
  • Liaison with school staff and caregivers
  • Ongoing monitoring of academic progress
  • Attend graduations

High School

  • One-on-one tutoring and homework assistance provided by certified Broward County Public School teachers
  • Educational life plan
  • College tours
  • Liaison with school staff and caregivers
  • Ongoing monitoring of academic progress
  • Attend graduations
  • Senior Days
  • SAT/ACT test prep
  • Liaison with BRACE advisors
  • College readiness
  • Community service hours
  • Non-traditional educational institutions (GED, charter schools, alternative schools, vocational/technical schools)

Post-Secondary

  • One-on-one tutoring and homework assistance provided by certified Broward County Public School teachers
  • Educational life plan
  • Transition to college (transport, orientation, dorm supplies)
  • Education support (housing, employment, linking to campus support network)
  • Educational emergency needs (room and board)
  • Educational case management (monitor grades, year round support)
  • Honor graduating scholars at our annual HANDY Scholarship Breakfast
  • Assist in locating other scholarship opportunities
  • Connect scholars with internship and networking opportunities
  • Attend graduations

HANDY SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA

Criteria for the Scholarship Applicants:

  • Must be a resident of Broward, Palm Beach or Miami-Dade County.  Please note that those students from Broward County shall receive priority in regards to scholarship award.
  • Currently fulfilling high school or equivalent requirements.
  • Grade Point Average (GPA) of a 2.0 on a 4.0 scale for high school and college applicants. For students currently attending college, student must be enrolled on a full time basis (12 credit hours for undergraduates) to be eligible.
  • Must meet one of the following: a foster care youth, a ward/dependent of the courts, in relative or non-relative care, a part of the Fostering Panther Pride program at Florida International University or involved with the Broward County ICON Program through HANDY.
  • Application or acceptance to an accredited two or four-year institution or vocational school.

Requirements:

  • Submission of transcript and ACT and/or SAT scores.
  • Two letters of recommendation, with at least one from a school staff member.
  • Copy of the Student Aid Report (SAR) received as a result of filling the Free Application for Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA).  You may fill out the FAFSA electronically at www.fafsa.ed.gov.  The SAR will be reviewed only for the purpose of assessing the scholarship application and will be treated as confidential information.
  • Completion of required essays.
  • Completion of the Scholarship Candidate Agreement and Electronic Signature.
