Clothing Bank

HANDY’s Clothing Bank provides free clothing, shoes, personal care items, beds, cribs, and household items to the abused, neglected and disadvantaged children who qualify for our services.  Since its inception, over 30,000 children have been served.

Abruptly removed from an abusive or dangerous situation, children often leave with little more than the clothes on their backs.  Our Clothing Bank furnishes everything at no charge from infant to adult size clothing, shoes, and supplies.  Grants awarded to HANDY are used to supplement new clothing donations and collaborations with Dignity U Wear, SteinMart, TKO Apparel Inc., Gifts In Kind, Ross, Pottery Barn, and Kato’s.

In 2003, an anonymous benefactor pledged to provide HANDY with the funding necessary to expand the Clothing Bank.  The benefactor’s goal is to provide our children with new clothing to help build the children’s self-esteem by selecting clothing that was not previously worn by someone else.  Their premise is that abused and neglected children have enough self-esteem problems with which to cope.  Having to wear used clothing, albeit nice used clothing shouldn’t be one of those issues.  An important part of a child’s confidence comes from feeling “just like everyone else.”  On June 7, 2004, the new facility was opened in Lauderdale Lakes.

HANDY donates clothing that is inappropriate for our children to local churches and the Salvation Army.

We are no longer accepting used clothing at the Clothing Bank.  We are gradually changing over to new clothing, ensuring that the children who shop at our Clothing Bank receive up-to-date, quality items that increase their self-esteem.
